Kevätkuulumisia
In English below.
Mexico Cityssä on jo aivan kevät!

Puiston jälkeen menimme Polancoon, New Yorkista tuttuun Magnolia Bakeryyn maistamaan kuppikakkuja. Tunnelma oli ihana ja kuppikakut maukkaita!

Viime viikon torstaina pidimme Juanin luona Suomi-illallisen.

Matka El Rosario-suojelusalueelle kesti noin kolme tuntia.

In English.
It's spring already in Mexico City! Most days the temperature is around 25 celsius, the sun is shining and the trees have flowers. My allergies have also started to kick in... I decided to let you guys in on what I've been up to during the last month.
The weekend after we went to Guadalajara I spent a "family Sunday" with Regina. In the morning we went to visit the Chapultepec castle, where you can learn about Mexican history and how the life was in the castle. On Sundays residents and nationals can enter for free, so even in the morning it was pretty full of people.
After the castle, we went to Starbucks and Regina's parents came to pick us up from there. We went to have lunch with them in an Italian restaurant and after that for coffee in Polanco with Regina's cousin and his wife. It was a nice afternoon full of good food, coffee, and conversations.
That weekend was full of friends, as on Friday we went to play board games in a restaurant/bar called El Ocho with some of the other interns and on Sunday evening I went for dinner with Phany, who was on exchange in Turku in 2009-2010.
On Tuesday I went to lucha libre with Regina and her friends. After work I went to Regina's flat, we drank a few beers, and then took an uber to Arena Mexico. After the lucha libre we went back to Regina's for a while before everyone headed back home. The same week I also went for dinner with Juan, who was on Rotary exchange in Tampere in 2008-09. He also lives super close to Regina and me, such a coincidence!
The week after that there was another earthquake on Friday 16.2. I was on my way to the supermarket and heard the alarm super well. This time the alarm warned us about 80 seconds before. I was already outside, so I just went to the exit of Walmart's parking hall, where there were no cables etc and where a lot of other people also gathered. After the alarm stopped we thought it was a false-alarm, but in a few seconds the ground started shaking. In my opinion it didn't feel as strong as the earthquakes in September, but that might also be because I was in an area where the ground is a bit more firm. After the earthquake ended I waited a little while just in case there were replicas, before heading back home. Luckily I was super close. We had lost electricity at home, but it got back within an hour. When we got electricity back I heard that the earthquake had been 7.2 magnitudes, so pretty strong. The epicenter was on the coast of Oaxaca, so further than the second earthquake in September, for which reason it didn't feel so strong in the City.
The next day we went on a trip to Guanajuato and San Miguel with Hangout Mexico, but I will write a separate post about that. There was a replica Sunday-Monday night - I woke up to the alarm and went outside half-asleep, but couldn't really feel anything.
The following weekend (24.-25.2.) I went to the historic center with Regina. We had lunch in Casino Español, which was a super beautiful building, and they served Spanish food in the restaurant. We had to wait for the table for about an hour, but it's normal here to have to wait during weekends, especially in the city center. However, they served us free beer and wine while we waited. The food was delicious, I had some paella. After lunch we did some window shopping in the center before heading back home.
On Sunday I went to the Chapultepec park with Diego, Natalia and Danna. We walked around the park and found totally new areas. We also went into a mirror maze. After the park we went to Polanco, to the popular New York -based Magnolia Bakery to try some cupcakes. The atmosphere was really nice and the cupcakes delicious!
Last week Thursday we had a Finnish dinner at Juan's. It was me, Juan, Diego, and Andrea and Denise with their boyfriends. Andrea and Denise were also Rotary exchange students in Finland the same year as Juan and Regina. I brought some rye chips, dip, Fazer chocolate, Finnish candy, and Koskenkorva sauna barrel -vodka. The vodka tasted almost like mezcal, with a slightly smoky flavor! I also made traditional makaroonilaatikko for dinner and Denise brought a fruit cake for dessert. It was fun enjoying Finnish snacks in good company.
On Friday we organized a surprise birthday party for Michael. Me and Diego went to their place to organize directly from work and we were later joined by Danna (Peru), Yale (Venezuela), Thais (Brazil), Natalia (Brazul) and a few other friends of Micha. Matheus tried to make their commute as long as possible and in the end Micha was very surprised that we were all there. We spent a nice evening playing board games and were joined by some more people later on.
On Saturday we went to the state of Michoacan with Diego, Natalia, Matheys and Thais to see the Monarch butterflies. They go to the forest in Michoacan to spend the winter, and are there from November to March. So it was one of the last weekends to be able to witness this and we decided to rent a car for the journey. There were some problems in the car rental agency in the morning and in the end we could only leave around 1pm.
The trip to the El Rosario -sanctuary took around three hours. When we got there we were in a bit of a hurry, as there was only about an hour before closing time. We started trekking the mountain towards the area where the butterflies were, but the altitude made it difficult to breath and we were told it was about a 45min-1 hour hike away. Thais and I decided to travel up to the altitude of 3300 meters by horse, while Diego, Naty and Matheus trekked up.
I was a bit nervous about riding a horse, but the views were just incredible. The experience was definitely work it! When we got up we met with Diego, Matheus and Natalia, who had already seen the butterflies. We had to still climb up a bit to see them and on the way we met with a ranger, who took us to the butterflies.
The sight was incredible: hundreds if not thousands of butterflies flying around up in the air and other hundreds or thousands already hibernating in the trees. The ranger took some butterflies to his hand and told us about the journey they took. He also guided us down the mountain and the way back went swiftly by foot. When we got down the sun was already setting so it was time to head back to Mexico City.
On Sunday we went to an outlet in Estado de Mexico with Diego. We first had lunch with Danna and Yale and then took an uber from the border of Estado de Mexico and Mexico City to the outlet. They already had outlet prices, but on top of that had super good sales. For example I bought Nikes for 28 euros and two pairs of Vans for 45e. So it was definitely worth the trip! On our way back we went to Danna and Yale's apartment for dinner before going home.
As you can see I've been pretty busy during the weekends, let's see what this one brings along!
